Is the formula charged? If not, this is likely not the naming scheme to use. See suggestions on the right.

is one of the

atoms in this group: Br I Cl Mn N C. Read more about this group.
We have assigned n = 3.

Examples

BrO3- n = 3 thus O3 = On O3 gets the "-ate" suffix BrO3- is named Bromate
BrO2- n = 3 thus O2 = On-1 O2 gets the "-ite" suffix BrO2- is named Bromite
BrO- n = 3 thus O = On-2 O gets the
  "hypo" prefix and
   "-ite" suffix
BrO- is named Hypobromite

Examples

Notice NO2- is and ion and is named based on this scheme: Nitrite. Nitrite is an oxyanion and therefore charged.
However NO2, a neutral covalent compound, is named based on a different schemeand is therefore named Nitrogen Dioxide (= Nitrogen Peroxide).
